Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI) is hosting the fourth cycle challenge around Lough Derg which will take participants through the beautiful Shannon region. This year spoof character Concy Ryan, the RTE Storyland finalist, will be swapping his horse for a bike in support of MDI. The route is approximately 70 miles long with food and refreshment supplied throughout the day. All levels of fitness are catered for and all are welcome to take part, have fun, and raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Ireland. To date the cycle has raised over €8,000 for respite support services. This years cycle will take place on Saturday the 11th of June starting at Two Mile Gate, Killaloe with registration open from 10am. To register you can either pay a registration fee of €75, €45 per person in groups of 4 or more or alternatively take a sponsorship card to raise money for MDI. Please contact Amy Bramley at 086 818 5352 or emailamy@mdi.iefor further information.
Proceeds from the cycle will be used towards the provision of the Respite Support Services the charity provides to 573 members. It is essential that those affected by muscular dystrophy, their carers and family members have adequate respite on a regular and frequent basis in order to support and maintain the physical and emotional health of all concerned. Respite is a means of giving carers a physical break from what is continuous and demanding work. Without this type of support, enormous strain both physical and emotional is experienced by carers. Weekend breaks, respite in the home, and youth and adult summer camps are offered to members and their families. Regular and secure funding for this respite service is essential, to enable members and families to have a good quality of living.
What is the future of urban cycling? This is the intriguing question that Dr. Peter Cox from Chester University will explore on Tuesday 2nd November at 7pm in the Greenhouse on St. Andrew’s Street in Dublin. Dr. Cox has a wealth of experience in the areas of social change, sustainability, and the history of cycling technologies, and the event is sure to attract cycling advocates, academics, transport and planning professionals and members of the general public.
The presentation by Dr. Cox will provide a broad historical and comparative overview of the development of cycling in the UK and globally. He will comment on the range of initiatives available and suggests what might be best to safeguard and support cycling in contrasting contexts. He will consider the interplay between cycling technologies and infrastructure, and explore the question: how do we ensure that we are planning and building for the future and not the past?
Two out of three Europeans live in an urban environment. Mobility Week is an initiative to promote sustainable modes of travel and improvement of the urban environment.
Living Streets is a day long programme of events being organised by Dublin City Council on South William Street, Drury Street, Fade Street, Castle Market and Coppinger Row on Wednesday 22nd September as part of Mobility Week. Roads will be closed to motorised vehicles and there will be free live music and comedy, an exhibition of cargo bikes and an outdoor evening movie.
Music will be provided by Rory Faithfield, the Niall Toner Band and the Hot Club of Dublin on the main stage on Drury Street. Live comedy acts will include Andrew Stanley, Damien Clark, Eric Lalor and Fred Cooke. When it gets dark we will have a screening of the animated masterpiece ‘Belleville Rendezvous’ on Dury Street. This projection will be pedal powered so we will need volunteers from the audience to keep the show going.
It is going to be a great day so walk, cycle, get the bus or hop on a LUAS and come and enjoy one of the most vibrant parts of Dublin City – car free for a day.
On Friday 17th September, as part of European Mobility Week 2010, Dublin City Council will be hosting an event to showcase a type of electrically-assisted bicycle called a ‘Pedelec’. Combining pedal and battery power, Pedelecs open new possibilities to commuters, particularly those with a long or hilly commute. With pedal-assist technology, the electric motor boosts your pedal input so that you can ascend hills with ease and travel further while cutting your fuel costs as well as your impact on the environment. The top assistance speed is typically about 25km/h with a range of about 50km; the battery can be recharged overnight (4-6 hours required). Pedelecs are also eligible for the bike-to-work scheme.
Mobility Week is an initiative led by the European Commission to promote sustainable modes of travel and improvement of the urban environment. This is the 10th year of European Mobility Week and over 900 cities and towns have registered to participate.
The event itself, titled King of the Mountains, will take place on Fishamble Street (beside Civic Offices) from 12.00-18.00 and all are welcome to try out the newest Pedelec technology on one of the city centre’s steepest climbs. Pedelec suppliers from all over Dublin will be in attendance so that members of the public can test-ride the bikes and get information on how they operate, how much they cost, etc.
The event promises to be great fun for all with music, guaranteed entertainment, and everyone who participates will be entered in a draw to win the fantastic prize of a Giant Twist Pedelec bike worth €1500! We may even stage a fun King of the Mountains style competition with the prestigious prize of a customised polka dot jersey signed by top Irish cyclist Dan Martin, winner of the 2010 Dublin Cycle Race.
On Saturday 16th October why not take part inthe second annual Sponsored Spin for Chernobyl? Last year this event raised €52,000 for Chernobyl Children’s Project International (CCPI) and this year a target of €100,000 has been set, so your help would really be appreciated. Your ‘Spin’ can be any of the following:
- 40km cycle (from Ballsbridge to Little Bray and back) OR
- 10km run OR
- 5km walk
This event is for a great cause and promises to be lots of fun with prizes, fancy dress, raffle and post-event party.
CCPI develops, facilitates and effects long-term sustainable community-based solutions and provides medical and humanitarian assistance to the victims and survivors of Chernobyl. As always the challenge is maintaining the support to ensure the charity’s work continues and helps those truly in need with on-going programmes including medical programmes – supplying medical equipment, trained medical staff, upgrading mental asylums & the living conditions in orphanages, providing foster homes for children so as to take them out of institutional care etc.
