Grand Canal Cycle Route update

Posted 12 Dec 2011 to News by barry

The Grand Canals Cycle Route is an ambitious project which will eventually provide an orbital cycling route around the city centre and also tie in to an existing route that extends all the way to Adamstown. The current phase of construction along the Grand Canal between Grove Road and Grand Canal Square is underway and I’m sure many of you have noticed the new cycle track and cycle signals on display. Work is still in progress on the cycle route and it is anticipated that it will be finished in February/March 2012 and the signals put into operation. Further updates will be posted on this website as soon as there is any change in the situation.

It seems from a newspaper report in the Irish Times at the weekend that Dublin City Council is about to lose its Cycling Officer. It would appear that the Dept of the Environment, Community & Local Government is not willing to continue funding the Officer. Which leads me to believe that the Department is not interested in the Environment, the Community or Local Government anymore

why cant signalling be activated on the section that is currently open? or at the very least signage put in place on the intersections where the route crosses the main route to warn motorists not to block the crossing when stationary or to keep watch to their left when turning. Its becoming very dangerous on that route at the moment. Its also hugely frustrating that you cannot cross the junctions at baggot street (evenings) and leeson street (morning and evenings) safely as rush hour traffic stops on the crossing all the time.

How long will it take before the traffic lights for cyclists / pedestrians will be activated at the corner between Grand Canal Plaza and Clanwilliam Place?
The works have ended since late September 2011 but the traffic lights are still operating only for cars… It is very dangerous alike as the cars do not slow down or stop for cyclists and pedestrians and the only way to cross the road is jumping between cars..

The Grand Canal Cycle Route will be opening next month and we’ll have a firm date within the next week.

What the story with getting the Grand Canal Route cleaned by the council?

Currently its covered in gravel and glass. (22nd February)
I’ve stopped using it as I was getting way to many punctures.

I have recently started cycling to work in St Stehpens Green from Lucan. I use the Grand Canal route and I realy love it. I am interested to see that you mention that this route will eventually run the whole way from the city centre to Adamstown. Do you have any further details? Cheers!

Gavin in fairness you need to talk to councillors about that, the route which opened this week was supposed go into the northside. A short bit was to go further along the canal and link up with the coastal route at Clontarf. It was suspended on the request of some councillors:

But the council has plans for the canals, both north and south: http://www.dublincitycycling.ie/blog/index.php/2012/03/canal-way-cycle-route-opens/

Cycled the route from Charlemount Luas to Sheriff Street, it’s really good, apart from the cobbled section under the railway, which is a nightmare on a bike without suspension. I hope they can come to agreement with the residents in the east wall as it will be a great to cycle the length of the Canals & the coast.
