Lunchtime Bike Ride
On Wednesday 22nd June, Dublin City Council will host a Lunchtime Bike Ride in the city as part of the Bike to Work Day initiative. This event will consist of a leisurely lunchtime cycle through the streets of Dublin, taking in the Samuel Beckett Bridge, City Quay, Merrion Square, The Pepper Canister Church and part of the new Premium Cycle Route along the Grand Canal. Participants will gather in Grand Canal Square at 12.45pm in Dublin’s Docklands before setting off on a leisurely 6km (30 minute) cycle. The cycle will conclude in Grand Canal Square where market stalls will be selling food so participants can grab a quick bite before returning to work. In addition to the food stalls, the fun atmosphere will feature the announcement of the winners of various prizes, including best dressed competitions, at this fun, fit and chic event.
Be part of this fun event and be in with a chance to win some great prizes – the Best Company Team prize (most people from one organisation) is lunch at ely gastro pub (vouchers to the value of €10 for each member of the team) and a bottle of Isotonic Non-Alcoholic Erdinger on the day! To enter this competition simply contact us @ www.dublincitycycling.ie/contact with the name of your Company, the number of members in your team, and the name of your team contact.
There are also prizes for Best Dressed male, Best Dressed Female, and for the best dressed bike! The first 500 people to register will get a goody bag filled with cycling enthusiasts’ gadgets and everyone who registers online is in with a chance to win an Apple iPad 2.
Dublin City Council is inviting everyone who travels by bike to participate in this event (over 16 years old) – users of Dublin Bikes are also encouraged to attend. To get directions to Grand Canal Square and to see a map of Dublin Bikes stations in the nearby area, check out the latest posts from the blog.

- June 9, 2011 at 8:43 pmHopefully not too many cyclists get their bikes and bones wrecked by all the dangerous potholes in the city center. Never mind all the smashed glass in the fading ‘cycle lanes’.

- June 20, 2011 at 8:46 pmI registered for this and someone stole my bike outside chq at lunchtime today. Boohiss – and I don’t think I’ll be able to get another one for this Wednesday.
Is along the northside quays that a well known ‘bike thieving’ spot, by any chance? I only left it (locked to railing and wheel locked too) for 5 mins when I went into chq to get my race number for tomorrow’s Docklands Run. No queue inside and when I came back the railing had been pulled out of it’s ‘socket’, my bike had been slid off and carried away, as they wouldn’t have been able to wheel it.
If it’s possible to compile a list of bike ‘blackspots’ in Dublin, that’d be a great help.

- June 21, 2011 at 1:42 pmEmma, sorry to to hear about your bike being stolen.
There is no need to compile a list of ‘blackspots’. Unless your bike is securely locked (with a high quality u lock & a cable lock) to a solid object (ideally a bike rack), you bike is not safe **anywhere** in the city.

- June 23, 2011 at 11:13 amHands up any cyclist who has come into the city and could not find a secure cycle rack to lock their bike to? Or put it another way. How many bikes does it take to fill a car space?

- June 24, 2011 at 1:23 pmHi Bren, Dublin City Council recently concluded a public consultation on this website to help identify areas where bicycle parking is in demand. In February, the first batch of new bike stands were installed at the most popular locations. We are currently preparing design drawings for the second contract. If you have some ideas, feel free to send them in.
